Chapter 5: Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai, Thailand. My favorite stop on our month long trek.
Population: 150,000
Hostel: Julie's Guesthouse. $3/night.
Coolest Hostel: great environment, central location, cheap price and they even have a tasty restaurant.
Chiang Mai has over 300 Buddhist Temples (wat in Thai).
It is located some 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok, among some of the highest mountains in the country.

Why do I LOVE Chiang Mai?
Reason #1: We went on an elephant trek...

Not my best jump shot, but check out the elephants behind me!

Steering the elephant down the trail. My legs tucked tightly behind his ears so I wouldn't wiggle off! Dumbo's skin was rougher than sand paper, I couldn't wait to get back to my seat!

The Glauser's riding an elephant.

Dumbo stopping to scratch an itch..

That baby elephant would loop his trunk around the other elephant's tails and then swing them. Adorable.

Reason #2- The Chiang Mai Sunday Walking Market. Vendors fill the streets for, what seemed, miles. Tanier and I walked around ALL night and couldn't get enough.

Musicians played all down the street.

Buck and Hanna shopped around a bit.

Balloon Vendors kept passing us.

These beautiful hand painted umbrella's were about $5. I would've been in big trouble if I was headed home the next day because I would've bought this ENTIRE market.

Worms. Crickets. Grasshoppers. They're all spiced up, not as bad as they sound.

Reason #3- Rotee. Buck at a Rotee stand. It's a thin crepe they wrap a banana in, grill it, then cover in chocolate.

It looks just like this!

Reason #4- Long Neck Tribe.

These women are more prominent in their tribe. Instead of wearing neck rings, they get to gauge their ears. Check out those earrings!!

(Side note: Tanier affectionately nicknamed me with my frizzy hair as 'Cave Woman'.)

At the top of the Long Neck Village.

Weaving scarves.

Gardens of the Village.

Reason #4- Orchid Gardens. Our tour guide took us to this cool greenhouse.

Reason #5- Mr. Potato, tour guide of another group that followed us everywhere.
Reason #6- REGULAR ankles, sooo glad to have you back!!

Reason #7- Hiking to several waterfalls.

Reason #8-zip-lining through the jungle.

If you travel to Thailand, you MUST go to Chiang Mai. And you MUST zip-line with the Flight of the Gibbon.

This was the single most expensive thing we did in Thailand, but it was worth it.

Mr. Cash about to push me off another ledge.

Smile Glauser's!

Our group is down to 4. We lost Tyson, he went back to the U.S. early because he had school to attend to.

Reason #9- funny tshirt vendors. Tanier's favorite shirt: YouTube Myspace and I'll google your Yahoo.

Reason #10- Tuk Tuk's

Hole in Chiang Mai.

Riding on our sleeper train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. It's 435 miles, which took 12 hours. Best sleeper train we rode on. Lots of foreigners, relatively clean, quiet and fun.

Reason #11- I have daydreams about this EXACT Papaya Salad. It cost me 50 cents and it was perfectly (un) ripe with just enough sweet and spice.

Good Bye Chiang Mai and Hello...Bangkok.

Tabbi!! I love all the pics. I better not show Dan though. He'll want to go back ASAP. Especially because Chaing Mai was one of the things we wanted to do but missed. Zip lining through the jungle? Yes please! Isn't Thailand amazing? I seriously want to go back asap. Seeing the food made me miss it... and yeah, we always ate too much while there b/c it's so cheap and good..:) I loved those crepe things with chocolate on top! I ate about 5 a day. Oh you know, one on the way to the beach... one in the morning... one during a massage.. one before bed. How can you resist when they're basically free?:) I'm glad you had fun!

p.s. love the car.
